A California teacher who suffered a traumatic brain injury after tripping on an uneven sidewalk has been granted a jaw-dropping $7.5 million settlement from the city.

In 2018, special education teacher Justine Gurrola was strolling through the 5900 block of El Rancho Drive in Whittier when her foot snagged on a raised section of sidewalk, launching her face-first onto the concrete.

The sudden accident caused fractures to her wrist, elbow, and nasal bones, abrasions to her knee and a deep cut to her lip from a broken tooth, according to court records obtained by The Mercury News.

미국 캘리포니아주 한 여성이 관리 소홀로 울퉁불퉁해진 인도에 걸려 넘어져 머리를 다친 뒤, 시 당국으로부터 750만 달러(약 106억 원)의 배상금을 받게 됐다.

17일(현지시간) NBC 로스앤젤레스와 데이비스 뱅가드 등 현지 매체에 따르면, 피해자 저스틴 구롤라는 지난 2018년 2월 25일 캘리포니아주 휘티어시의 인도를 걷다 사고를 당했다.

그녀는 당시 조카와 산책하던 중 가로수 뿌리로 인해 들뜬 보도블록에 발이 걸려 앞으로 넘어졌다. 이 사고로 구롤라는 손목, 팔꿈치, 무릎이 골절되고 코뼈가 부러지며 입술이 찢어지는 등 중상을 입었다.

CT 촬영 결과 두피 혈종과 외상성 뇌 손상(TBI)이 확인됐으며, 사고 이후 7년이 지난 지금도 신경학적 치료를 받고 있다. 의료진은 그녀가 전두엽과 측두엽의 일부 기능 손실로 기억력, 감정조절, 실행능력 저하를 겪고 있다고 진단했다.

구롤라의 변호인은 “당시 인도는 나무뿌리로 인해 약 5cm(2인치) 이상 솟아 있었지만, 시 당국이 방치했다”며 “피해자가 넘어지지 않으려다 얼굴부터 시멘트 바닥에 부딪쳤다”고 설명했다.

그는 또 “시민들이 수년간 같은 장소의 위험성을 지적해 왔음에도 휘티어 시 당국은 아무런 조치를 취하지 않았다”고 비판했다. 실제로 시 관계자 역시 법정에서 “나무뿌리에 의한 인도 손상은 시에 제기되는 가장 흔한 민원”이라고 증언했다.

구롤라는 “내가 사랑하던 일들을 더 이상 할 수 없게 됐다. 그게 가장 괴롭다”며 “이번 사건으로 다른 사람들이 같은 고통을 겪지 않기를 바란다”고 말했다.
