The Federal Reserve on Wednesday kept interest rates steady, and chair Jerome Powell said that he will remain in place until his successor is confirmed, raising the prospect that he could continue leading the central bank after his term is up May 15.

미국 통화정책을 결정하는 중앙은행인 연방준비제도(연준)가 18일(현지 시각) 기준금리를 연 3.50~3.75%로 동결했다. 한국(연 2.5%)과 금리 차이는 1.25%포인트(상단 기준)로 유지됐다. 연준은 “중동에서 벌어지는 일(이란전)이 미국 경제에 미치는 영향이 불확실하다”고 밝혔다. 월스트리트저널은 “연준은 중동 전쟁으로 인한 불확실성을 인정했다”고 전했다.

연준의 이날 금리 동결은 시장에서 예상했던 결정이다. 지난달 28일 미국과 이스라엘이 이란을 공습하면서 전쟁이 시작되면서 국제 유가가 배럴당 100달러 이상으로 상승해 인플레이션 우려가 제기됐고, 도널드 트럼프 행정부가 도입한 글로벌 관세 여파가 시장에 완전히 반영됐다고 보기 어려운 상황에서 당분간 상황을 지켜봐야 한다는 의견이 지배적이었다. 실제 이날 글로벌 벤치마크인 브렌트유는 이란이 주요 가스전에 대한 이스라엘의 공격에 보복하겠다고 밝히면서 배럴당 110달러까지 치솟는 등 국제 유가가 뛰어올랐다.
