A woman who played a clarinet while undergoing brain surgery has told the BBC "it was just amazing" to see and feel her fingers moving "better and faster" during the operation.

Denise Bacon, 65, underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS) as she has Parkinson's Disease, which has affected her ability to walk, swim, dance and play her instrument.

During a four-hour operation at London's King's College Hospital, Keyoumars Ashkan, a professor of neurosurgery, performed the procedure to help reduce her symptoms, while Ms Bacon stayed awake.

The professor said she played the clarinet continuously, which helped to "fine tune the position of the electrodes deep inside her brain, until she was able to play her beloved musical instrument."

의료진은 이를 통해 수술 효과를 실시간으로 확인할 수 있었다.

22일(현지 시간) AP통신 등에 따르면 데니즈 베이컨 씨(65)는 영국 런던 킹스 칼리지 병원에서 올해 7월 뇌심부자극술(Deep Brain Stimulation·DBS)을 받았다.

​

뇌에 전극을 삽입해 전기 자극을 주는 방식의 DBS는 파킨슨병 등 신경계 질환 환자에게 효과가 있는 치료법으로 알려져있다.

​

특히 환자가 깨어 있는 상태에서 수술을 집도하는 경우가 많은 것이 특징이다. 운동 기능 개선 등을 실시간으로 확인하기 위함이다.

베이컨 씨도 두피와 두개골만 국소 마취한 상태에서 4시간 동안 깨어 있는 상태에서 수술을 받았다. 뇌에 전기 자극이 가해지자 손가락 움직임이 부드러워지는 것을 체감할 수 있었다고 한다.

수술을 집도한 키우마르스 아슈칸 교수는 “열정적인 클라리넷 연주자였던 환자에게 수술 중 악기를 연주해보자고 제안했다”고 설명했다.

이어 “뇌에 자극을 주자마자 손가락 움직임과 연주 능력이 즉시 향상되는 걸 확인할 수 있었다”고 설명했다.

​

베이컨 씨는 충전식 자극기 배터리를 가슴에 이식 받았다. 이 장치는 최대 20년까지 사용할 수 있다. 또 필요할 때 자동으로 자극 강도를 조절한다.
