At least 28 people killed as crane falls on train in northeast Thailand

The train, travelling from Bangkok to northeast Thailand, derails when a construction crane falls on it.

At least 28 people have been killed and 64 injured as a construction crane fell on a passenger train in northeast Thailand.

The accident took place on Wednesday in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, 230km (143 miles) northeast of Bangkok. The train was headed from the Thai capital to Ubon Ratchathani province.

14일 오전 태국 중부 나콘라차시마주(州) 시키오 지역의 고속철도 공사 현장에서 대형 크레인이 무너면서 32명이 숨지고 64명이 다쳤다.

하루 뒤인 15일 오전에는 방콕 근처 사뭇사콘주의 고속도로 건설 현장에서 크레인과 콘크리트 빔이 와르르 무너져 내려 2명이 숨졌다.

​

이번 공사는 태국 대형 건설사 이탈리안-태국 개발(ITD)과 중국 국영기업 중국철로총공사(CREC)가 합작한 ITD-CREC가 맡고 있었다.

​

문제는 해당 합작사가 맡은 공사 현장에서의 대형 사고가 이번이 처음은 아니라는 것이다.

​

지난해 3월 미얀마 강진 당시 진앙에서 1000km 이상 떨어진 방콕 시내에서 신축 중이던 30층 규모의 고층건물이 완전히 붕괴되면서 95명이 숨지는 사고 역시 해당 합작사가 시공했다.

​

이 사고의 원인으로 시진핑 중국 국가주석이 주창하는 대외 팽창 정책 '일대일로'(一帶一路)가 또다시 주목받고 있다
